Search for baby at Saskatoon landfill continues

Nov 3, 2010 | 6:40 PM

Day three of the search for the remains of little baby girl at the Saskatoon landfill has yet to turn up anything.

About a dozen searchers are scouring the area. A cadaver dog leads the effort as they sift through mounds of waste.

Police admit it's been a long and arduous task up until now, and they're not convinced their efforts will arrive to a successful conclusion.

They're covering off an area about 300 feet by 300 feet. The footing is uneven, unstable, and dangerous. Broken bottles and dirty needles are the biggest safety concern.

But Steve Kaye with the K-9 unit says those are only a few of the factors working against them.

“We're going on the best information we have, and it's difficult to say, but even things like scavengers,” said Kaye. He admits, sadly, they may never find the remains.

“Our chances of success here are.. the odds are against us. This is a massive area, and this is a massive amount of material,” said Kaye.

But he says searchers are motivated by the thought of a proper burial for the baby girl.

“We hopefully have the ability to do the proper thing for this deceased little person. It's something I think all these people have in their head,” said Kaye.

Police say a 17-year-old girl gave birth to the baby over the Thanksgiving weekend. The body was put in the garbage and taken to the dump with the curbside garbage pickup. Still no word on if charges will be laid.
