Melfort business hopes to stay afloat

The provincial highway hotline is warning of several roads closed due to flooding.

Highway 41 at the junction of 3 and 6 has water over the road. Flag persons are in attendance.
Thomas Motors is located nearby.

According to owner Darrell Farley, they were forced to scramble Sunday afternoon.

“We got here about 2:30 p.m. and by that time the water was up to the tires in a lot of the cars. We don't want them in water, and so we had to move fast to get them out of the way,” said Farley.

He said extra staff was called in to help.

“We ended up moving the cars twice because we didn't put them far enough the first time. By 5 o'clock, we were running out of high ground and then we got lucky when it broke the highway. As soon as it went over the highway, it took the pressure off.”

Farley said he is concerned about today with the temperatures expected to be even warmer.

“We are really scared. We are not even sure we are covered for flood if the cars got flooded. If we weren't here yesterday, we would have had 20 cars full of water. And then we've got bikes we've got to move, and four-wheelers and snowmobiles. It's a big deal.”
