UPDATE: Council approves affordable housing project

Apr 18, 2011 | 12:16 PM

An affordable housing project in the West Hill has been approved by council.

Northern Spruce Housing Corporation reapplied for a development permit to build five duplexes on 22nd Street West, just south of Angus Merasty School and on Monday might, city council consented to approve the project's permit.

It’s the second time the corporation has made an application to build homes on the property.

The first round of permits and bylaw changes to accommodate the construction met with opposition from local residents in the form of delegations to city council and a lawsuit from a group of residents and the West Hill Heritage society.

Their lawsuit called into question the council of the day’s consultation with the public, but the challenge failed in court and in a subsequent appeal.

Despite the loss in court, lawsuit plaintiff Eric Lanoie said the development’s effect on the neighbourhood is still a concern.

“Some of our concerns certainly remain live issues like traffic on Fifth Avenue, which is a very narrow street and thing like the existing infrastructure, which there isn’t very much of since it’s an older part of town,” he said.

Despite the concerns, Lanoie said at this point there weren’t any united legal actions expected from the neighbourhood, but would remain an option in the future.

The corporation said that with the perwit secured it will move as fast as possible to get the project rolling.

Permits of this nature expire after 12 months.
