Sportsman and Athletes of the Year to be Honored by Kinsmen Club of Prince Albert

May 7, 2011 | 4:49 PM

The Kinsmen Club is pleased to recognize Darren Whitehead as the 2010 Sportsperson of the Year.
Whitehead has served as a teacher and coach to athletes, been involved with Special Olympics, and has been a leader among volunteers in the City of Prince Albert for the past 28 years.

“It is important that we have people like Darren in the community to support young athletes as they strive to excel in competition. His dedication to these athletes and his support of Special Olympics truly captures the spirit of the Sportsperson of the Year award,” said Mike Aimoe, president of the Kinsmen Club.

He will be recognized for his contributions at the annual Sportsperson of the Year banquet alongside the male and female Athletes of the Year, Evan Kopchinski and Lori Earl.

Kopchinski is the St. Mary High School MVP in football, volleyball and basketball, while maintaining a high GPA and excelling in the classroom.

“He is recognized by his teammates and peers because he not only excels in every sport he plays, but he never disrespects an opponent or coach. His positive attitude combined with sports excellence is what has earned him this Athlete of the Year award,” Aimoe said.

The female athlete of the year for 2010, Earl, is being recognized for her hard work and representation of Prince Albert Fastball. Along with pitching for zero losses at the Midget B Provincial games and Western Canadian Championship games this year, she has been awarded a full three-year scholarship to Houston Baptist University.

“Earl has given her all to make the Prince Albert Aces a notable competitor, which is why she was nominated for the award,” Aimoe said.

“Her nine year history of positive achievement with her sport really made Earl an obvious choice.”

The community is welcome to celebrate these successes at the 2010 Kinsmen Sportsperson and Athletes of the Year event featuring Dale Hawerchuk, hockey hall of famer.
