Notes from Peru – John Fryters Preaches in Peru
Jess Camalari, my Spanish interpreter from Prince Albert, and myself have been in Lima, Peru for about one week now. The weather has been wonderful – 22 to 25 degrees celcius every day with lots of sunshine.
The first couple of days were rest days and I took the opportunity to show Jess some of the tourist sites in this busy and exciting world capital. The inner city of Lima (Centre Lima) is full of colonial buildings dating back to the occupation by Spain. We visited numeruous churches, saw the changing of the presidential guard, and went for a drive along the Pacific Ocean.
Peru is currently in the middle of an election. In April there were Presidential elections but the the winner, Mr. Ollanta Humala, did not have sufficient votes to be declared the winner. Consequently, there will be a run-off election in the beginning of June 2011.
It is currently a battle between Mr. Ollanta Humala, who is seen by many as a moderate leftist, and Keiko Fujimori, who is considered as a rightist and favored much by investors. According to the latest poll (DATUM – May 12th, 2011) Keiko Fujimori is leading in the polls with a 2.7 point lead with 40.6% against Mr. Humala with 37.9%. Also, on May 12th, 2011, Keiko Fujimori got a major boost from the endorsement of the Solidaridad Nacional – a party which ended fourth in the April election.
