Saskatoon field trip locations affected by teachers refusing extra activities

The annual Children's Festival in Saskatoon could be sparse this year if Saskatchewan teachers continue withholding voluntary services into June.

The festival goes from June 4-8. Executive director Shauna Bradford Wilson admits they are concerned about the turnout.

“Having said that, the show will go on,” laughs Wilson. “If rain hasn't stopped us and snow hasn't stopped us then we're still going to keep putting up the tents.”

Bradford Wilson is convinced that even if school trips are cancelled, organizers will do whatever they can to ensure kids and their families find their way to the festival.

“We're working with schools who have contacted us already with their own hypothetical situations, and we're working with them on a case by case basis.”

Bradford Wilson says regardless, the five-day event will go on as planned.

The Saskatoon Forestry Farm, another popular spot for spring field trips, is also feeling the effects of a teachers work-to-rule across Saskatchewan.

Zoo manager John Moran says some classes had to reschedule after last week's walkout, and a few rural schools have outright cancelled their trips.

“But the majority of them (classes) to date have not cancelled, so I'm not sure how that's going to work. I'm actually anticipating many of those to cancel their programs.”

However, Moran hopes that's not the case.

“We see a great educational benefit to the programs that we offer here at the Forestry Farm, and we just hope that all the children will be able to come out and partake in them.”
