Saskatchewan Roughriders prospect Terrence Nunn impressing at rookie camp

After two days of rookie camp, the Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Terrence Nunn has been one of the most impressive players taking part in the three day camp.

The receiver has NFL experience and that seems to be paying off as he has consistently been getting behind coverage and has caught every ball thrown his way. Despite his success early in camp, Nunn is staying level headed.

“I just go out there and think that every ball that's in the air I have to compete for. Every ball that's thrown my way I have to catch or the quarterbacks not going to trust you when it's going your way.”

Nunn was invited to a free agent camp in Orlando this winter and made an impression on the coaches and hasn't disappointed in the first two workouts with the other Roughrider prospects. Like most American receivers trying to make it for the first time in the CFL, Nunn has to adjust to the fact he gets a 10-yard run up to the line of scrimmage before every snap.

“You have to learn how to time out the waggle with the quarterbacks and you have to make sure you always hit the waggle with speed and hit it with patience to make sure you come out of your route correct.”

But it's not like the newcomer to the CFL isn't enjoying the advantage he gets on the defensive backs, “It's really fun, I really enjoy it, it's just getting the hang of it.”

With yesterday's news that Rob Bagg re-injured his knee and the obvious hole left by the departure of Andy Fantuz, there is more room than ever at the receiving position for a player like Nunn to make a tremendous impact in his freshman year but he's not getting ahead of himself.

“I just have to come out here and work and learn from the older guys and let them help me learn so I can at least have a good opportunity to (play).”

Offensive coordinator Doug Berry believes Nunn has done everything right over the first two days, “He's been very noticeable in a favourable way and has certainly shown some good speed and up to this point he's made three of four outstanding catches.”

However, Berry said you have to temper enthusiasm with the knowledge that some of the standouts in rookie camp are going to get another big dose of reality when they go up against the veterans in three days.

Rookie camp concludes tomorrow with their final workout starting at 9:30am at Mosaic Stadium. The veterans report Saturday and get started with two-a-days on Sunday beginning at 8:15am.
