Prince Albert and area seeks bid for First Nations Games

After two years of work, the fate of a local bid for the 2013 First Nations Games is now in the hands of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Selection Committee.

A coalition was created by Muskoday First Nation and the communities of Prince Albert and Birch Hills to form a strong and unified bid for the games.

“The impact of hosting these games would be huge for all three communities,” said Marvin Sanderson, bid co-ordinator.

FSIN representatives toured through the three communities, Tuesday, evaluating the services, preparation and proposals to determine if the bid committee could be ready to facilitate games of this magnitude.

A banquet wrapped up the event, providing local politicians and representatives from all three communities, an opportunity to speak to the benefits of hosting the games here.

“We are looking at bringing in more than $1.6 million in revenue, but economic impact aside, we are looking at all the benefits of this event for the local youth involved in its preparation. Through the process they learn about working together, the joys of volunteerism. These projects give them something to be really proud of and that’s one of the primary benefits,” Sanderson said.

Slated for July 17-21, 2013, the First Nations Games is more than a sporting event. The games also involve intensive cultural and wellness programming. There are large venues of concern including security, lodging, medical services, food services, financing and marketing.

FSIN Sport, Culture and Recreation Director, Courage Bear spoke to the group about the process of selection.

There are two more reserves to be inspected before the FSIN makes its final decision in July.
