Saskatchewan school bus filled with children hits water filled ditch

Jun 15, 2011 | 5:08 PM

A group of children on a school bus avoided a disaster after their bus left a highway near Punnichy, north of Regina around 8:30 a.m.

The RCMP were called after reports that the bus, which carried 15 passengers, drove off Highway 640 while heading south. It ended up plunging into a water-filled ditch.

Cpl. Dave Clark explained the bus managed to stay upright and everyone on board made it out safely.

“The water level near the rear of the bus was approximately chest-height,” he said. “It was deep enough to be a concern but there was passers-by on the scene and we were advised quickly enough that everyone was able to exit,” said Clark.

The driver, in her late 40's, and a 17-year-old girl were taken to hospital in Regina and treated for lower back injuries. Six other kids between the ages of nine and 17 were treated for minor injuries in Wynyard.

Clark admits it isn't clear just yet what caused the accident.

“We still have to look at statements from potential witnesses, statements from the driver, the mechanical fitness of the vehicle and the conditions of the road. The collision analyst also does have a number of measurements taken and analysis to be done,” said Clark, adding that no other cars were involved in the accident.
