Fill out your census: city

Jun 30, 2011 | 6:35 AM

The City of Prince Albert is urging its residents to complete the 2011 census form.

That’s because the census numbers are what higher levels of government use to determine the amount the city receives in grants.

According the city, it works out to about $1,100 per year for each person that registers as a resident of the city.

Mayor Jim Scarrow said that completing the census is imperative because there have been obvious growth in the city with more than 400 homes and condos constructed since the last census from 2006.

“We know we’re somewhere over 40,000 people, we just need to receiving the number of dollars — our fair share — for the community and the citizens who choose Prince Albert as their home,” Scarrow said.

Many unfilled forms

According the local census office, more than 4,200 homes have yet to fill out and return their forms. That works out to about 25 per cent of the form mailed out.

With the deadline passed to fill out the census that means enumerators are set to take their efforts to the next level.

That includes phone calls and house visits that will continue until some information is gathered

Nothing to fear

Census field operations supervisor Patricia Leson said many people have told the office that they don’t want fill out a census because of fears that it will have a negative effect on other services.

However she said this was definitely not the case.

“People are afraid that this information is not going to remain private and that it’s going to get correlated with Social Services or to landlords,” said Leson.

“They have to understand that it’s very private that nothing is ever transferred to any place else and it just stays right with Census Canada.”

She said anyone who still has to fill out their census form can either wail it away or contact the local census office.

The local office can be reached at 764-5213.
