Conexus Credit Union Helping to “Connect Us” to Our Community!

To many, it may look like just a patch of field behind this group, but to them it is the future home of their Community Skatepark… and Conexus Credit Union just helped get them one step closer to that reality!

The smiles and gratitude were apparent when Brad Fennig, Vice President, Retail Services for the North Region and Clayton Glauser, also with Conexus, presented a $5,000 cheque to the Birch Hills Skateboard Club to assist with the building of this Park.

Last fall, armed with only an idea and a desire to see a safe place for our youth to Skateboard and call their own, a small but dedicated group of youth and adults began to plan. RYSC Youth Group committed to partner with the Birch Hills Rec Club and community and approached Birch Hills Community Church for permission to build the Skatepark on a piece of property one block from the Birch Hills High School.

Both the Town and Birch Hills Community Church approved this request and what started out to be an idea for a small slab of cement with removable ramps and a budget of $10,000 has now grown into fundraising and plans for a complete concrete Park with a proposed budget of $115,000.

Because of the size of the community and the limited recreational activities outside of organized sports, an area to play street hockey and basketball has also been incorporated, making this particular park a greater benefit to a wider range of the community. Through various grants, donations, Gifts in Kind and fundraising efforts, this group has raised just over $72,000 in a relatively short time and are hopeful they will reach their goal and begin construction by the end of fall.

Fundraising efforts continue to be in full swing with a Family Tailgate BBQ and Silent Auction being planned for the end of August. An autographed Weston Dressler jersey will be one of the featured items for the auction as well as a trip for 2 anywhere West Jet flies!

Tickets on a Limited Edition Saskatchewan Roughrider BBQ are being sold in the community and will be drawn at the Silent Auction. Family contests and games are being planned for this event and full details will be released shortly.

The support from the community has been incredible and with Birch Hills being a “bedroom” community to Prince Albert, the support of PA businesses and gorups has been incredible as well. A sincere “Thank You” to Conexus and all who have supported and are considering support of this project!
