Buffalo Pound water treatment plant finds temporary fix

Aug 2, 2011 | 6:40 AM

The Buffalo Pound Water Treatment plant continues to have problems following a storm on Friday.

Just before midnight on Friday, the facility lost power, which would eventually get restored around 6 p.m. Saturday.

“When the power was turned back on it was discovered that a transformer had failed right at the water treatment plant,” explained Ken Wiens of the City of Regina, adding they now have part of the plant running on a generator.

“That generator is being used to supply power to a part of the plant that is affected by the failed transformer,” said Wiens.

There's no time frame as to when the transformer will be replaced.

Until then, Wiens says people are being asked to not use water for things like watering the lawn, or running the dishwasher to avoid strain on the system.

“That will just lessen the load on the water treatment plant during the time that this temporary repair is in place.”

City of Regina reduces its water usage

Meanwhile, the City is taking some steps of their own to reduce their water usage.

On Sunday afternoon all 13 splash pads around the city were shutdown. City grass also won't be watered until the problem at the water treatment plant is fixed.

Staff also won't be washing busses, vehicles or City buildings with water, including Mosiac Stadium.

They're also asking people using recreation centres not to shower.
