Beatty re-elected chief of PBCN

Apr 15, 2015 | 9:32 AM

Peter Beatty has been re-elected chief of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.

Beatty received 2,327 votes in Tuesday’s band election. The runner up was Karen Bird from Southend, with 889 votes.

“I knew I had a very good chance of getting back in, but to get the landslide victory was surprising,” said Beatty on Wednesday.

Beatty did not get much sleep on Tuesday, he said. The final votes were tallied at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Beatty said his first order of business as chief will be getting all the councillors sworn in.  Beatty also plans to travel to all the member communities and discuss his portfolio.

“We have to have orientation, so they know what the issures are and what things are happening so we can make infomed decisons,” he said.

Beatty said he learned a lot on the campaign trail.

One of the central issues he plans to tackle in the coming months is the shortage of housing.  Construction will start in June on 52 new housing units.

Beatty said he also heard from band members of the desire to have a chief who is a lot more visible in the communities.

“It’s a huge area, but I think with a concerted effort on my part I think I can be a lot more visible.”

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation passed a new election code last year — one of the biggest changes will see chief and council serve a three-year term instead of two.

Beatty said council wil be able to get a lot more done with the extended term.
