School bus rear-ends truck, no one hurt

Apr 15, 2015 | 9:59 AM

A school bus taking children to school struck a truck, sending it skidding off of Highway 2 on Wednesday morning, but no one was injured, according to the RCMP.

The Saskatchewan Rivers School Division bus was travelling eastbound through the intersection of Highway 2 and Red Wing Road when it hit the rear of the truck, said Staff Sgt. Chad McLeod.

The bus was carrying 22 school children, according to Parkland Ambulance’s Lyle Karasiuk. The children were evaluated by paramedics, but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

Another Sask. Rivers bus arrived at the scene and took the children away to a nearby school.

The school bus remained at the side of Red Wing Road, with visible front end damage. The truck was still in the median ditch along Highway 2, north of the intersection.

The accident resulted in northbound traffic being limited to a single lane at the intersection.

Parkland Ambulance, Buckland Fire and Rescue and the RCMP were at the scene. RCMP officers and Buckland fire fighters were at the scene directing traffic.

RCMP collision analysts were also at the scene investigating. Sask. Rivers personnel were also at the scene.

Since the accident is still under investigation, RCMP had no further information about what led up to the accident or if any charges will be laid.

Sask. Rivers is also conducting an investigation into the accident. Transportation manager Ryan Bruce said they first allow the police to do their job, then in their internal investigation they take a comprehensive look at the basics: the driver’s role in the accident, as well as their actions or reactions that may have led to it.

“On the flipside of that, did they do something that may have actually saved those children? Some factor that was outside of their control. So, we try and look at the complete picture and try and find out if there is something that we as a school division can do better, is there some training that we need to do for our drivers or some training specifically for this driver?”

The school division will also look at outside factors such as road conditions and the actions of the other driver involved, as well as other the actions of drivers not directly involved in accident.
