Prince Albert-area men to receive bravery medals

Sep 23, 2014 | 7:25 AM

Two local men will be honoured in a special ceremony for saving a woman from drowning last May.

Kyle and Tye Anderson, along with their mother, have been invited to attend the ceremony in Regina on Nov. 7 to recognize their brave actions on May 17, 2014.

“Like if you were [going to] say, yeah, you're [going to] get a medal for this, you wouldn't think that when you were doing it. It was not on your mind,” said Kyle.

The rescue happened just north of MacDowall. A woman out quadding got too close to the river, fell in and began to drift downstream. The woman was no stranger to Kyle and Tye — it was their aunt, Carol.

Kyle and Tye acted quickly, rushing to their aunt's aid. After several attempts, they managed to pull her to safety, injuring themselves in the process. Pati Anderson, Kyle's mother, watched the events unfold from shore. She would do her part by yelling words of encouragement, telling Carol to not give up.

“She was going to go down the river and we weren't going to get her if we didn't get her out. It was like we either do this now or we lose her,” said Pati.

She said her sons have always been very close, so she was not surprised when both went into the river.

Four months after the incident, Kyle said he can still recall quite vividly the events of the day.

“I actually didn't spend much time in the lake this summer because of it. My brother won't even go in the friggin[g] water anymore. Tye dislikes the water now because of that situation,” said Kyle.

Tye, who is now 19, is attending medical school in Phoenix. He is being flown home to attend the ceremony in November.

The two men will receive medals of bravery, while Pati will receive a special certificate for her involvement.

Kyle said since that day, his relationship with his aunt has grown stronger.

“You know every time we see each other, we have to give each other a hug,” he said.

As for Pati, she remains a very proud mother.

“I am glad the boys are being recognized because they risked their lives that day,” she said.

The ceremony will take place at Government House.
