Health fair encourages active lifestyles

SIAST Woodland campus hosted a health fair at their Technical Building on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. About 20 different vendors came out to talk about things people can do to eat healthy and improve their lifestyles.

Lisa Davis, program head of recreation services, said the health fair is a good opportunity for people to find out about what they can do to lead a healthy lifestyle.

“We think it’s important because sometimes our students and the staff as well don’t necessarily have all of the tools and information that they need to make educated decisions about their health,” she said.

Charlene Bernard, at the Cancer Society booth, said it’s important people know about how they can prevent cancer.

“Some of the best ways to reduce your risk of developing a lot of cancers is to eat healthy, to maintain a healthy weight, exercise and to avoid smoking,” she said.

Davis said the feedback given throughout the day had been positive.

“[Students] are happy with the tools that the vendors are giving out and the information and the knowledge that each person has at each booth. [The vendors] are very happy as well because they said it’s really great to be able to spread their message to a large group of people in a short timeframe,” she said.

She added they were happy about hosting the health fair and hopes students will use the advice given to live healthier lifestyles.

“[As students] have more energy, in turn that gives them more efficiency not only as a student but as a community member and parent and friend as well so we’re happy about having it,” she said.
