Students play volleyball for a good cause

Oct 2, 2014 | 7:12 AM

Students from two Prince Albert high schools took part in a charity volleyball game at Carlton Comprehensive High School on Wednesday evening.

Senior boys’ and girls’ teams from Carlton played against teams from St. Mary High School. The event raised $1106.80 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Rene Quintal, a coach at St. Mary, said since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the purpose of the event was to promote that cause.

Curtis Bender, a coach at Carlton, said Quintal approached him with the idea of the charity game during the summer and he got on board right away.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you go, there’s always somebody that’s touched by cancer so it’s a really good awareness for everybody,” Bender said.

This game was the first and Bender said they are hoping to make it an annual event.

“Anything we can do to raise money and awareness is great for humanity,” he said.

Admission to the game was by donation and all proceeds will go directly to the Cancer Society.
