Morrissey ready to rejoin the Raiders

Josh Morrissey is full of emotion; a combination of excitement over rejoining the Raiders’ and a degree of disappointment knowing his dream of playing in the National Hockey League will have to wait another year.

The Raiders captain and franchise record holder for goals by a defenseman in a season has been reassigned back to the Raiders by the Winnipeg Jets.

“I definitely was going in the mindset that I wanted to make that team, so it’s disappointing to know that I’m not going to be able to do that this year,” said Morrissey.

But with that Morrissey said he won’t give up on his dream.

“My goal hasn’t changed.  I’ve always wanted to play in the National Hockey League and you know I love playing the game and I could not imagine how great it would be doing that for a living.”

All that being said, Morrissey said he is looking forward to re-joining his Raiders’ teammates and helping them win more hockey games.

“I’m just wanting to come in and play my game, be a leader, and contribute that way. As a team I think there is a really good start for us so far.”

As part of the Jets’ training camp, Morrissey was pushed to step up his game, and get out of his regular routine. Morrissey said he is not fazed about making the transition back to the junior-level style of play.

“It shouldn’t be too hard of a transition. I think the biggest thing will just be trying not to do too much my first few games back, play smart, and just play the right way.”

Morrissey said there is a great group of guys on the team this year, who all get along, and so he is looking forward to the potential scoring pairings.

Meanwhile fellow 19-year-old defenseman Ryan Coughlin has been traded back to the Saskatoon Blades for a 7th round draft choice. Coughlin who was recently reassigned to the BC hockey league was acquired from Saskatoon last January.
