Evacuation back on near Prud’homme after fire

Oct 15, 2014 | 10:51 AM

The evacuation order is back on for homes near the natural gas fire in Saskatchewan.

Efforts to stabilize the fire near Prud’homme have failed.

Just after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday the damaged well head failed and a larger fire was reignited.

“We do have a fairly large flame that is right directly over top of the cavern now. The well head itself has actually been pushed off the top of the cavern,” Dave Burdeniuk with SaskEnergy said, adding the situation was something they anticipated would happen.

Crews have been pulled back and the evacuation order is back on. Residents have been pulled back two kilometres away for safety reasons. A new well head is on scene.

“The plan now is whenever it is as safely possible, we are going to install a new well head over top of that cavern,” Burdeniuk said.

The flame was suppressed from 60 feet down to 12 feet Tuesday after crews were able to shut off the side valve, which was found to be the primary source of the fire.

Safety Boss, a specialized team from Calgary, has been trying to put the fire out since the weekend.

Investigators still are not sure what caused the ignition. No one was hurt.
