P.A. NDP candidate looks to bring city together

A familiar face in the multicultural and arts scene has put in his name as an NDP candidate for the Prince Albert Carlton constituency.

Shayne Lazarowich said he’s spent much of his adult life committed to “community capacity building, development, and education.”

He is currently the executive director of the Prince Albert Multicultural Council, local president of the Canadian Mental Health Association, board member of the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, as well as founding member of the Prince Albert roots band All Mighty Voice, among other things.

“I’ve been thinking about doing this for quite some time and I feel I’m established enough and familiar enough with the community in Prince Albert and what the needs are to be able to do that, so I look forward to the next election,” he said.

For Lazarowich, running for the NDP nomination was an easy choice because the NDP has always been a part of his life.  He said his family has supported this political view for a few generations, even before it was known as the NDP, he added.

Although it’s still early in the game, he said there are some particular issues he would like to address if he becomes the MLA, one of which surrounds health care.  He said the long wait-times that have been plaguing the Victoria Hospital on and off over the past few months is concerning.

“I think our hospitals need attention, our health care system wait-times and stuff, you know what’s going on now with the Vic[toria Hospital], I think that’s a really important issue for me; obviously, public health care accessible for everybody,” he explained.

To find solutions, Lazarowich said one of the traits he brings to the table is the ability to get people together.

“I’m definitely somebody that can work together and so I look forward to working with all levels of government.  I look forward to hopefully having a very positive relationship with the City of Prince Albert, especially with other community organizations and businesses here,” he said.

He said he also looks forward to meeting with other NDP candidates, members of the community and just getting his message across.
