Carlton student locks up with success

 It’s hard enough for a kid in high school to excel in multiple sports, and get good grades, but that is exactly what Tanner Pedersen is doing.

Tanner Pedersen is a Grade 11 student who has been the starting middle linebacker for the Carlton Crusaders since Grade 10.  He has also been competing on the wrestling team since Grade 9.

“When I was younger I always knew I’d play sports. My dad and my brother both were big influences as well. They were involved in multiple sports gave me exposure to them,” Pedersen said.

Pedersen wrestled last year at 98 kgs (215 pounds).  He received a gold medal at the O’Neil Titan Classic and finished fifth at provincials. He said he is looking to get even better in his Grade 11 year.

“My goal this year is to finish top three in provincials because last year I missed out of the medals by two spots, so that leaves a chip on my shoulder for this year to strive to get better,” he explained.

Pedersen has been playing football since he was in Grade 5 when he played for the Pee Wee P.A. River Rider. He has also competed in the Rough Rider Bowl Twice, which is comprised of the top Grade 9 and Grade 10 high school players in the province.  He would achieve this in 2013 and 2014. He also participated in the 2014 Canada Cup under-18 for Team Saskatchewan. 

He said he wants to have more success in Grade 12 and he knows what he has to do to accomplish it.

“I need to keep in the weight room throughout the offseason and focus on getting better.”

The wrestling season begins next week at Carlton Comprehensive High School.
