Local politician loses everything in fire

Plans of a new home in the New Year went up in flames for a Prince Albert politician and his wife.

Sol Sanderson who currently serves as a senate member on the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN), and his wife lost all their belongings in what was going to be their new home in a fire on January 1st.

After spending Christmas in Prince Albert the couple left for Manitoba. Sanderson said while they were gone two of their relatives stayed in the home.

“We were away and the boys were there, it was about 7:30 in the morning that it happened,” said Sol Sanderson.

Sanderson said they believe the chimney caught on fire and it didn’t stop there. Unfortunately the people that owned the property had full insurance but the Sanderson’s didn’t.

“Everything is gone, we lost everything,” he said. “Not a great way to start the New Year.”

The couple was planning on moving in to their north-side St. Louis Saskatchewan property this January after finalizing the sale of the home.

“We were just in the transition of purchasing, were into an arrangement of what you call rent-to-own and were raising financing to get the whole place, it’s a nice property, it’s…a little farm, 21.4 acres,” said Sanderson.

Even after losing everything Sanderson is thankful it was only items lost in the flames.

“There’s a lot of…stuff that we lost that will never be replaced,” he said. “Main thing is there is no life lost.”

After hearing about the fire Sanderson said family and friends have really come together to help them rebuild their lives. For now the couple is staying at Sol’s daughters place. 

Sanderson’s grandson Dane is looking for donations for his grandparents through an online fundraiser.

Sanderson was Chief of the FSIN from 1979 to 1986 and played an important role in the move towards First Nations government.
