Affordable housing unit gives 4 families a place to call home

Four young Prince Albert families were all smiles as they stood outside the units of their new four-plex.

On Monday, Linda Boyer, manager of Prince Albert Community Housing Society Inc. along with City officials cut tape to signify the opening of more affordable housing through the society.

“We’ve actually moved in four families, their young families with one child which is who we targeted,” said Boyer.

There are all types of people who need affordable housing said Boyer but these units are based on the dynamic of the majority of their applicants.

“We look at our waiting list, we have over 300 applicants waiting and the majority of them are young families with one child just starting out. So this gives them a chance to have a safe affordable home to start out in and be proud of,” she said.

The four-plex is located at 1249 15th Street West and Boyer said they are continuing to fill the demand for low-cost housing by asking the government for approval.

“There’s a demand for it,” she said. “We’ve put in a proposal for another four-plex to be built in the west flat again on a piece of land that we currently own and that closes on Jan. 30 so were hopeful that the government will approve it.”
