Raiders representing Cherry for charity

Sep 27, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders will be hoping the wrath of Grapes is on their side as they don his threads at the Art Hauser Centre Saturday night.

The team will be wearing sweaters inspired by the gaudy suits of TV personality Don Cherry as they take on the Medicine Hat Tigers Saturday night. The special jerseys are part of a league-wide fundraising campaign to promote organ donation in Canada.

All of the proceeds from sales of the uniforms will go to the Saskatchewan Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. The cause is close to the Cherry Family after Don’s son Tim received a kidney transplant from his sister Cindy. Although all Canadian markets in the WHL will be participating in the event this season, the Raiders are the first team to debut the customized sweaters.

“It’s a good event, it’s for a good cause. Every team in the CHL is doing it, and we’re happy to be the first out of the gate,” Raiders bench boss Marc Habscheid said, who will be wearing a Cherry-inspired custom suit behind the bench during the game. The jacket, which will also be auctioned off to benefit the charity, bears a Cherry autograph on the inside.

Asked how he feels about the new look, Habscheid joked “I’ll be looking real sharp for a change.”

The sweaters are listed for auction online on the Raiders’ website all week, and the remaining unsold sweaters will be auctioned off at the game Saturday night. This is the second game of a homestand that starts on Friday against the Calgary Hitmen.

The Hitmen opened the season with a loss in Cranbrook against the Kootenay Ice on Friday night but got back to an even record with a win at home against the Ice on Saturday. The Tigers had the same outcomes on opening weekend with a road loss in Lethbridge on Friday followed by a home win against the Hurricanes Saturday.
