Dropping pounds to fill hungry tummies

Feb 12, 2015 | 3:58 PM

A group of 30 to 40 dieters have dropped weight and helped put food in other people’s mouths at the same time.

Nicole Joy, owner and pharmacist at Gray Chemists Pharmacy and Ideal Protein Weight Loss Clinic, which runs out of the same building, held a weight loss competition that benefitted the Share-A-Meal Food Bank.

Joy said that for every pound a client lost, he or she would donate a dollar to the food bank.  This would be matched by the pharmacy.

“Our program is based on healthy lifestyle, a big part of that is healthy eating and that is not easy for everyone, it’s not affordable for everyone and thank goodness we have the P.A. food bank to help with that and so that’s where it started,” she said.

By February the group had lost around 317 pounds and on Thursday morning Joy presented a cheque for $634 to Wes Clark, co-manager at the Share-A-Meal Food Bank.

“The pounds they (the dieters) were losing were going towards money for the food bank,” she said.

Joy said they had a good experience raising money this way.

“I think we’ll look at that again next year or something different; we don’t know, but the food bank is an excellent source of healthy eating here for families here in P.A. that need a little bit of assistance.”
