Melfort doctor receives four month suspension after admitting to unprofessional conduct

Nov 29, 2024 | 3:33 PM

A Melfort doctor has been suspended for four months after admitting to two charges of professional misconduct.

The Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons has suspended Dr. Robert Steffen beginning Dec. 2 through March 31. Dr. Steffen was also reprimanded by the Council, which will be in written format.

Steffen will also pay the costs of and incidental to the investigation and hearing in the amount of $8,853.55 by March 31, 2025. Dr. Steffen’s license “shall be suspended until the costs are paid in full.”

The Council also requires that the Melfort physician “successfully complete an Ethics and Professionalism Course and an Anger Management Course acceptable to the Registrar and provide proof of completion.”

The course will need to be completed on or before March 31, 2025. If the courses aren’t completed in that time frame, his license will be suspended until such time as the courses have been successfully completed.

Steffen faced discipline from the College of Physicians and Surgeons after allegations that came forward in June.

The long-time Melfort physician was accused of striking a nine-year-old boy in the face for disobeying a direction in 2019 and spanking an eight-year-old boy in 2023 after the child pulled on some medical equipment.

He was also accused of inappropriately prescribing himself medication on one or more occasions between 2019 and 2023.
