Saskatchewan farmers say skyrocketing land prices have made it difficult for young producers to expand.

Will Robbins, a 43-year-old farmer who operates southwest of Saskatoon near the hamlet of Laura, said high prices are dissuasive.

He said more land means additional debt that would take too long to pay off.

Farmer Bill Prybylski near Yorkton, Sask. also said high prices have made it tough for younger producers, but it’s been a boon for older farmers looking to sell and retire.

Farm Credit Canada’s farmland values report said prices in Saskatchewan grew by more than 15 per cent last year.

A hectare in the province can sell for $6,000 to more than $16,000.

Leigh Anderson, an economist with FCC, said higher prices are due to strong crop revenues and tight supplies.

He said young producers struggle to expand because they don’t have many assets.

He adds one solution is to set up purchasing agreements with older farmers to transition the operation.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has created a new national program maximizing the long-term success of equity-deserving farmers in Canadian agriculture.

The Exchange will centralize information sourced from across organizations and offer support nationally for two successive cohorts of 20 farmers to access training, grants, mentorship, and networking.

NFU President Jennifer Pfenning said the organization wants to see farmers thrive in Canada.

“Enhancing farmers’ opportunities to build skills for their long-term success benefits us all,” Pfenning said. “We’re proud to be providing this program and hope to receive many applications.”

Applications are open until Sept. 27.

Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) will partner with BHP as the presenting partner of the Maple Leaf Finals Rodeo.

The partnership allows people from all over the world to attend the event during the six-day show in November. The Maple Leaf Finals Rodeo takes place over four days, and over 24,000 people attend to watch the athletes show off their unique skills.

CWA CEO Shaun Kindopp said growth of the show has been a major focus and strategic partnerships are a big part of that.

“CWA is surrounding ourselves with partners who align with our vision and want to build off the foundation we have already laid,” Kindopp said. “We are proud to partner with BHP for the Maple Leaf Finals Rodeo in November. This level of partnership is what makes a difference for our organization.”

This year, the Maple Leaf Finals Rodeo presented by BHP will take place at the Brandt Centre from Nov. 27 to Nov. 30.

BHP is a global resource company that is currently building the Jansen Potash Mine just two hours north of Regina. Once fully ramped up, it will be one of the world’s largest potash mines.
