Two veterinarians have been honoured for their work in cattle health and small animal medicine.

Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) presented Dr. Phil Klassen of Alberta with the Merck Veterinary Award for his for his decades of cattle work that contributed to the overall improvement of the bovine industry, particularly in cattle production medicine and disease surveillance.

Dr. Keri Hudson Reykdal of Manitoba received the Small Animal Practitioner Award from CVMA in recognition of her dedication to the advancement of small animal medicine and small animal practice.

An Alberta man is continuing efforts to restore and protect historical grain elevators in a town south of Calgary.

Leo Wieser, of the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre in Nanton, said he wants to save the elevators that have been there for a century.

He said although they are structurally sound, they require a million dollars of work to restore. There were more than 1,700 structures in Alberta in the 1930s. That number is down to 80, and Wieser said about five disappear each year.

The Nanton elevators recently finished third and received a $5,000 prize in the national ‘Next Great Save’ contest.

But Wieser said it’s only a drop in the bucket, and he’s reaching out for grants and running raffles and movie nights to pass the hat around.

Saskatchewan Forage Council presented its Forage Industry Innovation Award to Neil McLeod for his dedication to the industry.

McLeod has been a forage seed representative and dealer for 25 years. He started with Prairie Seeds in 1999 and then Northstar Seeds in 2006. He has also been a strong supporter of the Saskatchewan Forage Council and forage industry research and innovation.

McLeod was a founding member of the Southern Eagle Creek Watershed group in 2008, as well as a long-time board member of the group. He was also an active member of the Herschel Grazing Club and helped organize many events for the organization.

In honour of McLeod, the SFC will make a contribution in his name to the Alicia Hargrave Memorial Bursary, College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan.
