Mintos take care of Moose Jaw in weekend sweep, retake top spot in SMAAAHL

Nov 26, 2023 | 1:02 PM

The goal lamp was busy at the Art Hauser Centre this past weekend as the Prince Albert Mintos swept the Moose Jaw Warriors (U18) in their pair of contests.

Game one happened Friday night and saw the visitors jump out to a 3-1 lead after the first period with Taite Donkin scoring for the Mintos. Kelan Simmonds scored the lone marker in the second period before P.A.’s offence exploded in the third. Moose Jaw would get one in the period but it was no match as the Green and Gold hung five goals in the final frame with efforts from Will Whitter, Carter Cole, Owen Nelson, Lincoln Rogers, and Kale Margolis to help down the Warriors in game one 7-4.

Brady Holtvogt was given the nod to start the game and made six saves before being pulled midway through the first period. Joshua Henry took over in goal and made 19 saves in the rest of the game to collect the win.

Luke McKechnie was between the pipes for Moose Jaw and made 36 stops.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Friday)

Saturday’s game was kind of the same story with the Warriors getting out to a 1-0 lead heading into the second. The offense came to life for Prince Albert in the middle frame, with Whitter scoring twice along with Nelson and Margolis also scoring making it 4-1.

In the third, Donkin added to the lead before Moose Jaw came storming with a pair of shorthanded goals. By that point thought it was too little too late as Abinet Klassen and Van Taylor scored in the final five minutes to put the game out of reach with a 7-3 final score.

Henry got the start for the Mintos and managed 23 stops en route to the win while Ryan Bain made 29 saves and was handed the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Saturday)

The pair of wins propels the Mintos into sole possession of first place in the SMAAAHL with a 14-6-1 record with Swift Current trailing in the standings by just one point.

Prince Albert now gets set for a pair of away games in Southern Saskatchewan next weekend. The Mintos are in Regina to face the Pat Canadians on Saturday before heading to Wilcox to meet the Notre Dame Hounds on Sunday.
