The Beef Cattle Research Council has announced 12 recipients of $2 million in beef check-off funds following its 2022-2023 call for research proposals.

The work will take place at the University of Saskatchewan, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, University of Alberta, and the University of Guelph.

The BCRC, a division of the Canadian Cattle Association, is the national industry-led funding agency for beef, cattle, and forage research, and is funded in part through the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-off.

The check-off money is being used to leverage over $4 million in matching funding from government and other partners.

There are some changes coming to the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition.

The group is a collaboration between the Alberta Wheat Commission, Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission, and Manitoba Crop Alliance.

The Manitoba Crop Alliance will now look after the administrative functions, communications activities, annual reports, and planning and coordination of CWRC’s annual general meeting.

Lori-Ann Kaminski, who is the research program manager for cereal crops with Manitoba Crop Alliance, has been named the new President of the Coalition.

Quebec provincial police say a two-year-old girl has died after falling into a grain mixer on a farm north of Montreal.

The accident occurred Friday at a family farm in St-Lin-Laurentides, about 85 kilometres from the city.

RCMP Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau said emergency services were called at about 3:30 p.m. after the child fell into an industrial mixer.

The girl’s parents also intervened quickly but she had already died.

Police are investigating but authorities say there is no indication of negligence.
