Food Farm program back teaching Sask. youth about ag sector

May 25, 2023 | 5:24 PM

Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK) is celebrating its 10th year of teaching students the importance of farming through its Food Farm program.

Over the next few weeks, those in grade 3 will be able to see how some of their favourite ingredients for familiar foods like pizza, burgers, and fries are grown.

“It’s really just an immersive agricultural learning experience,” said Chandra Gusikoski, the communications manager for AITC -SK.

Students will also get a chance to learn more about bees, farm safety, water management, dairy, and more.

Gusikoski noted one of the cooler activities they’ll get to take part in is actually seeding some crops. The students will also be invited back in the fall when they’re in grade 4 to harvest their own crops.

The education tour is stopping in 10 communities:

  • Swift Current (May 25)
  • Prince Albert (May 30)
  • Lumsden (May 31)
  • Kindersley (June 2)
  • Melfort (June 6)
  • Moose Jaw (June 8)
  • Yorkton (June 13/14)
  • Norquay (June 14)
  • Tisdale (June 14)
  • Watrous (June 16)

Gusikoski added those who can’t make it to these communities can still take part in the program virtually.

“So it’s kind of the same experience as an in-person food farm, but it’s all done online through video and hands-on activities.”

Classes interested in taking part in-person can still apply by visiting AITC -SK’s website.
