Perennial Plot Tours in DeBolt and Fairview June 15 and 16

The Peace Country Beef and Forage Association will be hosting two separate tours at their plots to see how perennial plants faired with last summer’s drought and the harsh winter conditions.

The Association is holding perennial plot tours next Wednesday in DeBolt and next Thursday in Fairview to show what fares best in the region.

Last year had a very hot and dry summer followed by a cold winter with minimal snow cover at the beginning and lots of ground ice.

Extension and Office Manager with the PCBFA, Katie McLachlan said the Perennial Plot Tours give producers an opportunity to see how these types of crops do in our less than ideal weather.

“We’ve always done a lot of trials on what persists well in the Peace, what grows in the Peace and after last year’s severe drought and the bad winter we had, it was hard on perennials.”

McLachlan hopes the tours are well-attended “to hopefully help producers make some informed decisions if they are looking to put hay or pasture mixes down this year, so they can have a look and see what survived the really bad year we just came through.”

She says PCBFA has had good luck in their half and half or 60/40 grass and legumes mixtures and with new varieties and species of sainfoin and cicer milkvetch.

The Perennial Plot Tours do have a cost associated with whichever one wants to attend, to register for the tours click here.
