MELFORT, Sask. — The price of milk could be going up this fall.

Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) made a formal request to the Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC) for a mid-year increase to the farmgate price of milk due to the current inflationary environment.

According to the request, the increase would come into effect on Sept. 1 and would be deducted from any price increase that may result from the routine price review in the fall of 2022.

The CDC Board will consult stakeholders between June 13–15 and their decision will be announced soon after the consultations.

A new antimicrobial benchmarking project will allow Saskatchewan pork producers to compare their on-farm use of antibiotics to producers across Canada.

Saskatchewan Pork Development Board (Sask Pork) manager of Producer Services and on-farm food safety programs, Ravneet Kaur, said the project will evaluate current antibiotic usage on Saskatchewan swine farms and will be compared with other farms in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

“By monitoring the current use of antibiotics, producers and their veterinarians will have the tools to make more informed decisions regarding prudent and effective antimicrobial use with extensive reductions of use,” Kaur said. “The information generated will help develop a provincial baseline.”

Kaur said the information will also be used to educate and create awareness about antibiotic usage on farms and provide platforms for future discussions on usage.

Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba have already conducted different versions of antimicrobial usage projects.
