More precipitation expected over May long weekend

May 20, 2021 | 7:04 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A snowfall warning continues to be in effect for our region, and snow is expected to continue to fall moving east over the next two days.

Then, more precipitation is also in store over the May long weekend.

Janelle Gergely with Environment Canada says the snow should start to taper off in Medicine Hat this afternoon (Thursday) and be really light by the evening.

However, the Cypress Hills region is expected to get more snow.

Gergely says it’s typical for spring to have a fluctuation in temperature and precipitation with rain and snow.

Though Saturday looks like benign weather with a mix of sun and cloud, Environment Canada is watching a system in the States that’s expected to push northward into southern Alberta.

“So rain could start as early as noon on Sunday, but it will really intensify overnight and you’ll likely see rain all through the day on Monday and not ending until late into the evening. Right now it’s looking like there could be anything from 20-30 millimetres of rain for the area in southern Alberta including Medicine Hat which does extend into southwestern Saskatchewan as well,” Gergely explained.

She adds rainfall should be over by Tuesday next week, but the pattern remains quite messy.

There could be isolated showers, but not a steady system.
