Clairmont boundaries, firearms restrictions under review

COUNTY OF GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB. – County of Grande Prairie Council is asking administration to review the boundaries for the Hamlet of Clairmont as it relates to firearm restrictions in agricultural areas.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre says this came about after a motion brought forward by Clairmont area councillor Daryl Beeston.

“The boundaries in the Hamlet of Clairmont encompass a lot of farmland, not just the urban densification. On those farmlands, in the past, there has been a significant amount of migratory bird hunting.

“Now, because of the hamlet boundaries, farmers and those that used to hunt those migratory birds are no longer able to. So, we’re looking at what the logistics would be to identify areas for them to be able to continue to hunt those migratory birds.”

Beaupre says farmers want to keep birds away from their crops.

“This will help with the agricultural producers not necessarily having a safe haven for all those migratory birds to cause havoc on their crops.,” said Beaupre. “(This) will also provide some of that community that, in the past, had been hunting those migratory birds will be able to come back and actually continue to do that.”

Administration is to report back to council on areas where bird hunting can still take place. at the December 14 meeting.
