P.A. Literacy Network offers money management skills

Those who find themselves burdened by money worries, or those looking to pick up money management skills, were treated to a course on the subject in Prince Albert Thursday.

The Prince Albert Literacy Network held its ‘Financial Literacy Workshop – Get the Most out of Your Money!’ at the John M. Cuelenaere Library, free for all those interested in learning money saving and management techniques.

Cathy Dickson, a volunteer with the P.A. Literacy Network, hosted the event and said there were a variety of tips attendees learned.

“It’s basically budgeting. It’s basic information for how to save money, how to spend your money, and budgeting your money,” Dickson said. “Hopefully there will be a lot of discussion. This is just the beginning of setting up a spending plan so people can get on the right track.”

Dickson noted many people are often under the notion they should feel shame for money mismanagement, but added through a variety of small steps and changes it can be quite easy to get set on the right track.

“I think if people walk away knowing that they can change, and they can make a difference, and they know that small changes over a period of time can get you on the right track then that would be good.”

“We’re going to look at the little things like buying a cup of coffee every morning instead of just making some and taking it to work in a travel mug, and show how those little things can add up very quickly.”

Dickson also noted a large portion of people who experience issues with money often purchase small items such as coffee or food and fail to see the overall impact of the otherwise small purchases.

The financial literacy workshop is part one of four of a federal government money management program. Dickson noted the next workshop would be held in May, depending on interest, with the third workshop planned for fall.
