Local man cuts off hair for a cause

A Prince Albert area man parted with his hair for a good cause.

Gordon Hein was busy for most of the month raising money in support of the Rose Garden Hospice. The organization is not for profit and aims to build a hospice facility in the city to accommodate people who need palliative care.

Hein told paNOW having this facility is important. 

“I think it’s so essential that we have a place where people can go, that is respectful, has dignity for people who are in their last stages of life and to support families that are going through this as well,” he said.

This is not the first time Hein has given up his hair to raise money for a cause.

“I’ve grown my hair before and donated it for cancer and people seem to think, you know when you have long hair or whatever that you never cut it off, so it became a challenge at first,” he said.

The fundraising effort for cancer proved to be a success. Hein raised roughly $1,800. The success of this campaign made him think the effort to get the hospice built could benefit from a similar campaign. On Friday morning Hein guessed he had raised around $1,400 for the cause, with donations coming from between 40 to 45 different people.

One of Hein’s longtime friends had the honour of cutting the hair on Friday afternoon. 

“I think he’s been wanting to do that for quite a while, because he says I shouldn’t have such long hair,” he said.

Leading up to the cut, Hein said the change of season was somewhat on his mind.  

“I am thinking I maybe should have done this in the summer instead of the fall, but that’s why they invented toques and hats, so I’ll be wearing one for a while I am sure,” he said.
