Witness describes finding lost toddler on roadway

Aug 2, 2018 | 5:00 PM

A cab driver who came upon a toddler wandering in traffic Wednesday morning says he was shocked, both to see the little girl on the road and at how many people drove by seemingly ignoring the sight.

Ashish Sanhotra says he called authorities after finding the toddler wandering in the 500 block of River Street East just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. Sanhotra said the girl was wearing only a soggy diaper and was walking near the yellow divider in the middle of the road.

Sanhotra was heading east on River Street at the time with two passengers from British Columbia.

“What surprised me is there was no one that was looking for her or anything,” Sanhotra told paNOW. “She looked like she walked out of the house, wherever she was living or staying … I did the right thing, I believe, to call the police right away.”

The incident was one of two instances Wednesday of lost toddlers found wandering alone in the city. The Prince Albert Police Service issued a plea for information about the identities of the two girls late Wednesday afternoon saying one child l had been found alone in the 500 block of River Street East and another in the area of Eighth Street E. and 10th Ave. Both incidents were reported between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The Ministry of Social Services said Thursday that instances of young children found without supervision do not happen regularly. Trish Alcorn, executive director for the communications branch of the Ministry of Social Services said in an emailed statement that, in situations where a child is found lost and alone, the organization works with police and the RCMP to “ensure the immediate safety of a child in situations of abandonment, including helping find the child a safe place to stay if needed.”

The Prince Albert Police Service said Thursday that the two young girls were located in separate instances and the incidents are not related to each other. The girls are safe and police say they continue to investigate.
