Odyssey Productions bringing A Streetcar Named Desire to P.A.

A classic production is coming to Prince Albert.

Tennessee William’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, A Streetcar Named Desire, will be gracing the Gateway to the North later this month.

“It’s something I’ve been bugging Odyssey to do for years,” Director Kim Morrall said. “It’s a classic [play], it’s an actor and directors dream because there’s meaty roles that require a lot from actors and it gives directors a lot to work off of.”

Morrall said the play’s themes cover numerous uncomfortable, yet relevant issues including domestic abuse, sexual assault, and homophobia. During the intermission, Morrall said the mobile crisis unit will speak about the topics, as she likes to raise awareness about different issues through her productions.

She said the 15 cast members have been preparing for the last three months by rehearsing three times a week. When it comes to set and costume design, she said A Streetcar Named Desire has presented a few challenges.

“It’s set in the ’40s,” Morrall said. “One of the things I had the most trouble finding was a fridge that looked old.”

While she was eventually able to find a fridge which suited her needs, Morrall said she is still looking for fake trees and a few imitation streetlights to help bring the set to life.

Odyssey’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire will be a little bit more personal than some theatergoers may be used to. Morrall said the stage at the Prince Albert Collegiate Institute is just a little too small, so actors will be using a small portion of the floor as well. Morrall said spectators can expect to feel closer to the production than a regular show.

“Hopefully it works,” Morrall said with a laugh. “I have this vision of what it looks like in my head, and it’s really cool and neat, but in reality, we’ll see.”

The play will be shown on May 24, 25 and 26.
