Comets soar to spot in 4A Girl final

Mar 23, 2018 | 11:16 PM

The Melfort Comets senior girls’ basketball team netted themselves a spot in the 4A girl’s HOOPLA final with a commanding 63 – 45 victory over the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones Friday night.

The Comets struck early, opening the scoring and powering to a 29 – 10 lead after the first quarter. Things cooled down in the second, ending 46 – 17, despite the Comets fighting hard for possession and taking aim at the glass every opportunity they had.

Melfort put up another strong third quarter laced with fouls, rocketing the score to 61 – 25. But the Cyclones pushed back in the final frame, sinking threes and easily dominating the court.

In the scoring department, a healthy list of names chalked-up points on both sides. Melfort’s top scorer was Alexa Hangs-Copeland with 13, who drew countless standing ovations and chants from gleeful gold and green group gathered at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic gymnasium.  Moose Jaw’s Alexa Watterson topped the scorecard with 15.

The Comets will take on the Estevan Elecs in the final at 7 p.m. at École St. Mary High School Saturday, who took a narrow 65 – 61 victory over A.E. Peacock Collegiate earlier in the day.
