SaskTel Pioneers spread Christmas cheer

Dec 22, 2017 | 9:01 AM

The pioneers of Prince Albert were visited by some different pioneers yesterday, who brought along some seasonal cheer.

The SaskTel Pioneers stopped by the Herb Bassett Home Dec. 21 with boxes of gifts in tow. More than 30 residents in the home, who many not have otherwise had gifts, received something to put under the tree.

Michelle Herbst Sutor, a manager at the Herb Bassett Home, said the Pioneer program truly emanates the spirit of Christmas.

“We have many residents who don’t have family or who are unable to participate in Christmas and in gift-giving,” Herbst Sutor said. “I want to say on behalf of the Herb Bassett Home, how much I appreciate [the Pioneers] coming in here every year and doing this for our residents.”

She said the pioneer program has visited the residents at the Herb Bassett Home for all of the nine years she’s worked there.

Mike Van Coughnett, a regional sales manager for SaskTel, has participated in the program for four years. He said the exchange of gifts and giving back is for more than just children.

“If you look at seniors, they’re just as important. Their eyes light up just as much as somebody that’s younger when they receive a gift,” Van Coughnett said. “We think it’s important that everybody feels the spirit of Christmas, whether they’re young or old.”

Van Coughnett said he’s not sure about all the seniors’ situations, but he wanted to make sure no one felt lonely on Christmas Day.

To ensure residents got the items they need, they were asked to make a short list of things they would like to receive. Herbst Sutor explained collected the lists and passed along information to SaskTel representatives.
