Meath Park seeks to address local crime

A list of local communities taking a stand against petty crime, may include the Village of Meath Park.

The Rural Crime Watch group is meant to help improve the lines of communication with law enforcement agencies, and promote collectiveness among members.

Mayor Michael Hydamacka said residents of Meath Park were encouraged to attend the group’s first meeting in Christopher Lake in October. A similar meeting will be held in Meath Park early in the new year, at which time Hydamacka expects the village to formally sign up. 

 “If we join this group we can definitely have access to more resources and probably a better line of communication with the RCMP,” he said.

Hydamacka said joining the rural crime watch group would help address the growing number of thefts in the small community.

“A couple months ago, we had about five homes broken into in one night, so it’s concerning. We had a stolen vehicle dropped off in the village around the same time,” he said.

Elaine McMillan, who helped organize the Rural Crime Watch group in Christopher Lake, said she is excited about the idea of Meath Park joing the growing list of members. Communities involved include Christopher Lake, MacDowall, and the Rural Municipalities of Buckland and Lakeland.

McMillan said her group also had expressions of interest from the Rural Municipality of Prince Albert and the Resort Village of Candle Lake.
