FSIN, PAGC prepare for fall elections

Two Indigenous organizations are preparing to enter election mode this fall.

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is hosting vice chief elections at their fall assembly at the end of October.

This year, the second and fourth vice chief seats are up for election. Robert Merasty, the current second vice chief of the FSIN is not listed as a candidate for election.

In alphabetical order, the cadidates for Merasty’s seat are Simon Jobb, from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, David Pratt, from the Musocowpetung First Nation, and Lyle Whitefish from Big River First Nation.

Heather Bear, from the Ochapowace First nation is the current fourth vice chief of the FSIN. She’s up for re-election, alongside Fenton Favel, from Poundmaker, and Dolores Pahtayken from the Onion Lake Cree Nation.

The 2017 FSIN election assembly will take place at TCU Place in Saskatoon on October 24 and 26.

Two days before the FSIN election assembly, the Prince Albert Grand Council hosts its grand chief elections.

Current Grand Chief Ron Michel has said he is retiring from politics after a long career with the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.

Three candidates are vying for the grand chief’s seat.

Elmer Ballantyne, from the Montreal Lake Cree Nation, Brian J. Hardlotte from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and Charles A. Whitecap from the Shoal Lake Cree Nation are up for election in Prince Albert.

The Prince Albert Grand Council is hosting their Grand Chief elections during their fall legislative assembly on October 23 and 24 at the Senator Allan Bird Memorial Centre.
