Starters on the horizon for Roughriders after mini-camp

Apr 13, 2015 | 7:10 AM

After three days, five practices and several meetings, Roughriders Head Coach Corey Chamblin believes he saw future starters for the 2015 season at the team’s mini-camp in Florida.

Chamblin says he was impressed with the talent brought in as there weren’t any players that looked like a ‘fish out of water’ – in the coach’s opinion.

Chamblin was keeping a closer eye on the defensive players all weekend acknowledging that’s where the team needs to improve their depth. He believes they’re close to doing just that.

“I saw one or two guys out there that honestly could be starting day one barring any injuries and things like that. So there are a couple of starters out there. I really do believe that.”

As for names, Chamblin still doesn’t want to ‘jinx’ anybody but we’ll get a good idea on who impressed over the next few weeks as the Riders will start to sign those that impressed enough to come to camp in Saskatoon that begins on May 31.

The Riders had 70 players in Florida, and they’ll watch the film to make sure they make the right decisions. They’ll have about seven hours of film from the five practices to evaluate player by player.

The general manager is tempering his enthusiasm regarding any standouts from this mini-camp.

“You can get excited about two or three guys and then five weeks into your regular season you don’t really remember who they were,” explained Brendan Taman.

Taman did think the quality was high from the 50 new faces they had in Bradenton.

“It’s more, do they all belong? And I think, for the most part, they all did so now we just have to figure out who gets to the next step and who doesn’t.”

Taman and Chamblin acknowledges there aren’t a lot of positions where they need a young player to start right away, though Taman says there are more spots open then we think.

Durant throws again

Quarterback Darian Durant didn’t have any problem throwing the majority of the practice for the second straight day. It’s the first time he’s been throwing for three straight days and he looked 100 percent as he proclaimed after yesterday’s practice.

His offensive coordinator Jaques Chapdelaine was relieved to know the number one quarterback is healthy.

The Riders actually redesigned their plan with the quarterbacks and increased Durant’s reps this weekend after Durant told them to use him as much as they’d like.

“And I think we’re not disappointed, obviously. I think this is really positive to see where he’s at and I think he’s excited and that’s got to give him a lot of confidence heading into training camp,” Chapdelaine said.
