Melfort teacher steps up to NDP candidate

A high school teacher has been chosen as the next candidate to run for the NDP in Melfort

Linsey Thorton, a father of three in Melfort, was announced as the next running candidate for the NDP on Saturday at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

“As an educator and as a dad, building better schools and a brighter future is important to me,“ said Thornton. “I believe in Cam Broten’s vision: it can’t just be about the province doing well, it has to be about people doing well.”

While Thorton has spent the last ten years teaching at Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate he has also spent time as a coach for both basketball and football at the high school.

Outside of school Thorton spends time coaching his daughters’ soccer team and umpiring minor baseball in Melfort.

Thorton is also no stranger to politics, having been selected, in the past, to become a member of the local teachers association executive and a councillor for the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation.

Saskatchewan NDP leader Cam Broten said he felt Thorton was ready for the position.

When it comes to supports for students in classrooms, highway repairs and the quality of care we offer seniors, Melfort families should be benefitting more from Saskatchewan’s prosperity,” said NDP Leader Cam Broten. “Linsey is ready to speak up for fairness for Melfort, and speak up at the Legislature as a strong advocate for the people in his community.”

Thorton will run as the NDP candidate for Melfort in the next provincial election.
