Snow brings Sask. winter storm warning with it

A winter storm may not hit hardest in the Prince Albert area, but it’s going to have quite an impact this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning on Friday afternoon as they tracked a low pressure system bringing lots of snow and high winds into Saskatchewan, heading south east. 

Prince Albert, Shellbrook, and Duck Lake are among the areas set to be hit with 10 to 15 centimetres of snow, according to its forecast.

Prince Albert will get about 10 centimetres, and the south west area 15 centimetres.

“For Prince Albert, it’ll be Saturday morning, and should be ending late Saturday afternoon. And that should be the brunt of the snowfall. And then on Sunday the winds should be shifting to the north west,” said Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist, John Paul Cragg.

The bulk of the snow will land in the Saskatoon area, Battleford area, and north east of Kindersley, Cragg said.

The strongest winds will be felt in the Moose Jaw and Regina areas, with gusts up from 50 to 75 kilometres an hour.

“It looks like Prince Albert won’t be at the same risk as some other areas in getting blowing snow,” he explained.

Temperatures were set to drop overnight on Friday from the afternoon temperature of – 12 C.

 “At a temperature like – 19 C the snow is really fluffy and light, so it’s a lot easier to blow around,” Cragg said.

That means visibility on roads will be less than ideal.

“If you don’t have to go out, if you don’t have to drive any distance, then it’s best not to, obviously in these conditions,” he said.

He acknowledged a long-weekend makes it difficult to stay off the roads, and advised to keep an eye on Highway Hotline. 

If you must travel, “make sure it’s not in the middle of the storm or you’re not driving into the storm when you’re going someplace,” he said.
