Plane makes forced landing north of Prince Albert

Feb 6, 2015 | 12:22 PM

There were no injuries reported after a small plane was forced to make a landing Friday morning north of the Christopher Lake turnoff on Highway 2.

The small Cessna landed on the highway at around 11 a.m.

Darryl Naytowhow, who was driving into Prince Albert from Montreal Lake, was the first person on scene.

“I noticed the plane had just landed and the pilot was getting out and trying to get the plane off Highway 2,” he said.

Naytowhow quickly pulled over and offered his assistance. He said the pilot had told him that he had lost power, but everyone was OK.  There were four people inside the plane, including the pilot.

“Fortunately, there was no traffic, and behind me there were three semis with truckloads of wood, so they were pretty lucky to find that space of no traffic to land the plane,” said Naytowhow.

A spokesperson for the Transportation Safety Board has confirmed there were no injuries.

Peter Hildebrand said the privately owned plane was en route from La Ronge to Saskatoon, when the pilot noticed he was losing power.

The plane was moved off the highway shortly after landing.

Lakeland Fire Department along with Prince Albert RCMP controlled traffic and allowed the aircraft to fly away from the scene.

The cause of the landing was an iced up air box on the aircraft.
