NorSask roller derby league hangs up its skates

The NorSask roller derby league in Prince Albert is hanging up its skates.

The league that came together in December 2011 is disbanding due to lack of players.

Jammer Megan Nemish said she’ll miss the league.

“It’s been amazing, like NorSask is my first roller derby team I’ve joined and it just brought me to love the sport and the kind of people in it and I couldn’t ask for more,” she said.

Nemish has a few favourite memories, including the first game they hosted at home.

“Just being able to put all this work towards something to show your family and friends and then show P.A. what roller derby is all about,” she said.

The lack of players was behind the disbanding.  By the end, Nemish said they had six players and usually there are about 14 on a roster.

“In the long run, we wanted to play roller derby and with the numbers that we had we couldn’t really do that,” she said.

For her, it’s been hard to see it all go.

“I loved everything about NorSask and it’s kind of like your little baby,” she said.  “I guess it’s bittersweet because in the end that was the best decision for us.”

Learning a new sport with new skills was only one part of the experience in roller derby, she said.

“It was a little bit of [relieving] aggression of after a hard day at work or something like that because it is a little more of a physical sport and so you’re able to do a little hit and get frustration out,” she said.  “But also I’ve … met so many great people, so new friendships came out of that.”

Nemish said she is not sure if Norsask will return.

“There is the other league going on, so lots of us have gone over there too, but maybe in the future if roller derby does grow a lot more in Prince Albert there’ll be enough people to make another two teams,” she said.

She said she thanks all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters they’ve had for the past three years.
