Pats prevail 4-2 over the Raiders

Feb 3, 2015 | 11:38 PM

Sometimes you play well and lose. That’s how Prince Albert Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid looked at the 4-2 setback to the Pats in Regina.

The defensive battle bascially came down to one mistake. Raiders goalie Rylan Parenteau and centreman Austin Glover got crossed up behind the Raiders net midway through the third period, and Pats winger Austin Wagner took the puck and scored into an empty net on the wrap around to give Regina a 3-1 lead.

The Raiders battled back with Reid Gardiner’s 25th goal of the season on a wild flurry around the Regina net with just over two minutes to go. The Raiders were on the power play and Parenteau was pulled to make it a 6-on-4 advantage. Brendan Guhle came within inches of tying the game seconds later, but his backhand attempt rolled inches wide of the open corner.

The Pats pounced on another key mistake on the first shift of the second period as an uncovered Pavel Padakin walked in alone and deked Parenteau to give Regina a 2-0 lead. The Raiders recovered quickly with Guhle crusing down the left wing boards, around the Regina net and set up Matteo Gennaro for his eighth goal of the season. Guhle and Kris Schmidli came close to tying the game in the second period but both barely missed on their shots from the left wing circle. The Pats also had some prime chances. Raiders defenceman Brennan Riddle robbed Padakin point blank on a goal mouth scramble and Parenteau stopped a Braden Christoffer breakaway.

Simon Stransky came close to tying the game in the third period before the Wagner goal as the 17-year-old Czech battled into the slot, spun and saw his shot ring off the crossbar.

The Raiders outshot the Pats 27-22 in the tight defensive struggle. The Gardiner goal was the lone Prince Albert power-play marker on five advantages while killing off both Regina power plays.

Assistant coach Kelly Guard told the 900 CKBI post game audience they are pleased with the effort and praised the players for executing the game plan adding all that was missing was some breaks around the Regina net.

Gardiner was outstanding as he battled all night long and Gennaro also turned in a strong performance.

The Raiders were without defenceman Mackenze Stewart who sat out the second game of his two game suspension and Jayden Hart who missed his second straight game with an upper body injury.

They remain eight points behind Swift Current in the race for the final Eastern playoff spot heading into Wednesday night’s game in Moose Jaw. The Raiders trail the Warriors by a single point.

All Raiders games can be heard on 900 CKBI.
