Two Saskatoon bands up for Juno awards

Jan 27, 2015 | 4:05 PM

A pair of Saskatoon bands are nominated for Juno awards.

Local favourite the Deep Dark Woods picked up a nomination for album of the year in the roots and traditional category.

It’s the band’s second nomination. Singer and songwriter Ryan Boldt put the attention down to the Deep Dark Woods’ commitment to playing live.

“We’re always selling out our shows/ So, you know, it’s only a matter of time I guess until people in the industry part of things recognize that,” he said.

While the Deep Dark Woods leans more on the mellow side, Sasaktoon rockers Shooting Guns also snagged a nod in the heavy metal and hard music category.

Drummer Jim Ginther said it’s a strange measure of success for a band that never expected to receive any sort of national spotlight.

He said he took a while to process the information when he learned the band had been nominated.

“It was just like ‘wow, holy…I’ll bleep myself here… it was just really shocking,” he said.

Ginther said things really started taking off for Shooting Guns when they were listed for a Polaris music prize a few years ago.  He said he hopes the Juno nomination will help turn more listeners on to the band’s music.

The nominations were released Tuesday morning. The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 15 in Hamilton.
